FCJ – Faithful Companions of Jesus

Profile 2019

1.     FCJ SOCIETY  (FCJ )

The Society of the Sisters, Faithful Companions of Jesus (FCJ) was founded in Amiens, France on Holy Thursday 1820 by Marie Madeleine d’Houet (1781 – 1858).. Since then, the Society has spread to 16 countries.  In March 30, 2020 we will celebrate 200 years as FCJ.  The bicentenary celebration will be on September 21, 2019 (the birthday of Marie Madeleine d’Houet) until the Solemnity of Christ the King, November 22, 2020.   The FCJ Generalate is now in London, UK.

FCJ Sisters are called to follow Jesus in faithfulness, to stand at the foot of the cross with Mary and the holy women and there, to become one with Christ in his thirst for the coming of the reign of God. Strong in companionship with Jesus and with each other we work together in the service of the Church to build the body of Christ. FCJ Sisters live Ignatian Spirituality and seek to find God in all people, in all places and in all things.

The essence of our mission as Faithful Companions of Jesus is to be with Jesus in his mission. As the FCJ Constitutions state, we are called, like Mary, Mother of Jesus and Mother of the Church, and like the holy women, messengers of the Good News. We are sent to proclaim the Truth, Jesus who is alive and lives among us, who is Son of God and Saviour of the world. Mission is the whole of our lives given in service: it is not only what we do but more importantly who we are. Wherever we are and whatever our work, we are sent and our mission is to be faithful companions of Jesus.

We are now widely spread, living in the Area  of Asia (Indonesia, Myanmar, and the Philippines), Area of Australia, Area of the Americas (Canada, USA, and Argentina) and the Area of Europe, (Ireland, Britain, France, Switzerland, Belgium, Germany, Italy and Romania). We also minister in South Sudan, Africa. We are united in heart and mind, committed to living our charism of faithful companionship with Jesus and are enriched by our cultural diversity and internationality.

FCJ in Myanmar

On January 9th 2009, the FCJ Sisters started their mission in Myanmar.   Three sisters: Agnes Samosir and Fransisca Arti Setiati (both from Indonesia) and Marion Dooley (from Ireland) were sent to established the first community in Yangon.  With joy we welcome two of our first Myanmarese FCJ when Maria Khaing Nyein Aye and Cecilia Marip Seng Ja made their first vows in Yangon on December 8, 2018.  The community in Yangon now has four FCJ sisters: Emiliana Beta Suryawati, Fransisca Arti Setiati, Maria Sunarni and Cecilia Marip Seng Ja.

The FCJ Sisters are involved in education as well as in the informal education of various women’s groups, youth groups, young adults and children.  They are also involved in the spiritual development of people and have programmes in boarding houses and parishes, personal spiritual accompaniment and a monthly retreat for young women.  We also have a preschool in Dalla, Yangon.

At present Sr. Sisca works at Myanmar Leadership Institute and Sr. Narni works in Pastoral ministry at Campion Institute.  Sr. Beta still learns Burmese while at the same time involves in youth ministry.  Sr. Cecilia is the coordinator for preschool and also is working part time in GEN (Gender Equality Network)

Having been in Myanmar for almost ten year, and celebrating 200 years of FCJ in the world, we hope that FCJ roots grow deeper, and FCJ charism and spirituality to flourish in the lives of the people in Myanmar.
